*This post, as with all of my posts on single cards, is an opinion, an alternate view in that may or never arise. It is not meant to be a standard interpretation.
Let's begin with a little humor, as even the barber applies lather before the blade. Or blades, in this case, nine of them. Whereas I try to have a lighthearted approach in looking at the cards, it is not beyond me to have a more somber tone, as this card would allow.
The depiction above has three worries keeping the figure awake. If three is a number of creation, and nine completion, a point can be made that the 9 of swords is finishing of what we have founded emotionally.
In more detail, I can't help view this card as when your chickens come home to roost; that is if those returning fowl matched your foul words and actions.
It is said once you realize you are in a hole, you should stop digging. Most of us dig our own holes, a segway into the fact that the modern day association of the spades in playing cards would be tarot swords.
The minor nines lead back to The Hermit, what similarities do we see? Well, they are both cards of solitary figures in dark places. But I do like that The Hermit not only has a lantern (of truth) and the fact that the figure is typified by being elevated, both in importance and altitude.
In this instance, could The Hermit's lantern be illuminating the hole the nine of swords is in? The truth hurts. And so would the glare off those swords.
The card shows insomnia, and most can tell you the vulnerability of sleep is just as accessible to bedding that can remember and remind.

At this point many people look at the configuration of the swords in the RWS deck, and often conclude that they are a ladder the figure can use to climb out of despair.
Webs of deceit and holes both must be created first- there is no indication the swords appear out of nowhere; no hands from clouds are holding them in place. Here is where I see tough love, you must hit rock bottom on your own.
Those swords are installed in lines, as in the ones we tell ourselves and others;
"I can stop whenever I want to"
"Just need to finish this work project off the clock, Be home late"
"Relationship do over #257- It's going to be different this time"
There is craftsmanship.
More truth, it's going to hurt to climb out grabbing those blades.
We can live in fear of what hasn't happened, keep playing the movie of things that have, or look at the work required.
Look also at the bed foundation, the woodwork features a sword fight. Not to doubt Pamela Colman Smith's possible interest in Feng Shui, or any thoughts which would say what we sleep on top of infiltrates our dreams.
I see the quilt with all the astrology signs as proof that this can happen to all of us, no sign or planet conjunction is singled out.
Unless added with other cards judging you with a harsh fate, the good note of this card is that it's a Minor Arcana card; read that as 'it's just minor'.
Ask yourself, "Is this real, or memory foam?"
